Surgery & AnesthesiaAHO Surgical Suite

We understand that it can be very stressful when your pet has surgery and would like to assure you that at the Animal Hospital of Orleans your pet will receive the highest quality of care. Our patients safety and comfort are our top priority.

Before an elective surgery, such as a spay or neuter, or a dental procedure every patient receives a physical exam to assess their health.  We  also recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork for all of our elective surgery patients to ensure that there are no pre-existing conditions or issues that need to be addressed before anesthesia. For major surgeries such as mass removals and abdominal surgery, pre-anesthetic bloodwork is required.

Every surgical patient has a technician dedicated to monitoring anesthesia and vital signs. All surgeries are also constantly monitored for oxygen saturation and pulse rate using pulse oximetry. Blood pressure and EKG monitoring are also available when required.  We use the safest anesthesia available - the same one used in human hospitals.

Our hospital strongly believes in pain control and it is included in the cost of all our surgeries and extensive dental cleanings.  With the wide array of effective pain control medications available today, we have many options to help make your pet as comfortable as possible after surgery.  For many procedures, our therapeutic laser can also be used to reduce inflammation and speed up healing.

Fear Freesm is an educational program designed for veterinary professionals that focuses on the mental and emotional well-being of our canine and feline patients. The program consists of eight courses that, combined, provide the knowledge and tools necessary for veterinary professionals to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress in patients and their owners.

As an investment in improving our practice, we paid for all of our staff, from our receptionists to our kennel techs, to be trained and certified in Fear Freesm protocols. We want to make sure that your pet’s visit, from veterinary services to boarding, is the best it can be for both you and your pet. The last thing we want is for your pet to fear the one place that is fully committed to ensuring they live a happy and healthy life!

Testimonials and Reviews

"Took Buzzy for his first yearly check-up and was nervous about his interaction with the staff as he is a rescue and you can never be sure of their history.  Discovered at the appointment, they have become a Fear Free Certified Animal Hospital.  What a fabulous experience!!!! 20 STARS********** Rather than get through the appointment at any expense to Buzzy, they played with him in a soft music, pheromone infused room (he was already wearing a pheromone neckerchief, courtesy of the front desk) and enticed him with edible treats.  The whole idea is to make it a pleasant experience for the pup or kitty.  It was decided that we would come back next week for the "real appointment" to help Buzzy relax and see the office as a pleasant destination.  It obviously worked. As my other half took Buzz out to the car, and I talked with the staff, the outside door reopened and Buzzy came back in.  Did not want to go to the car! Usually our dogs can't get out of the vet's office fast enough.  Well done all. You even had me relaxed by the end of the visit." Deborah Miller
