What Is Veterinary Acupuncture?

Veterinary acupuncture uses very fine, sterile needles placed at specific points on the body. These points are connected to pathways involved in the nervous system, muscles, circulation, and other body functions.

Acupuncture may be used on its own or alongside conventional veterinary medicine to help manage pain, support mobility, and improve quality of life.

How Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture may be recommended as part of a treatment plan for pets experiencing:

A Fear Free Approach to Acupuncture

For some pets, the idea of needles may sound intimidating. Our goal is to make the experience feel like anything but a traditional veterinary visit.

Getting Comfortable First: Your pet doesn’t have to immediately jump into treatment. We give them time to explore the space, settle in, and become comfortable with the people around them.

Positive Reinforcement: Treats, praise, gentle handling, and other rewards can help create positive associations with acupuncture and veterinary care.

Low-Stress Handling: We avoid unnecessary restraint and use gentle, patient handling whenever possible. If your pet tells us they need a break, we listen.

Meeting Pets Where They Are: Some pets are happy to relax while receiving acupuncture. Others may need a slower introduction or shorter sessions. There is no one-size-fits-all approach—and that’s exactly the point.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, and most pets tolerate their placement very well. Some pets barely notice the needles at all.

Our goal is for your pet to remain comfortable and relaxed throughout the appointment. We continually watch their body language and adjust our approach accordingly.

In fact, some pets become so relaxed during treatment that they may lie down, settle in, or even fall asleep.

What Happens During an Acupuncture Appointment?

Your pet’s first visit begins with an evaluation so we can understand what is going on and determine whether acupuncture is an appropriate part of their care.

If acupuncture is recommended, we’ll introduce treatment gradually and pay close attention to your pet’s comfort and response.

Appointments are typically calm and unhurried. Your pet may be able to remain in a position that feels comfortable to them rather than being forced into a particular posture.

Over time, we monitor how your pet responds and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
