Surgery & Anesthesia

We understand that having a pet undergo surgery can feel stressful. At the Animal Hospital of Orleans, our priority is to provide safe, gentle, and compassionate care while supporting both your pet’s physical comfort and emotional well-being throughout the entire experience.

Before any elective procedure—such as spays, neuters, or dental cleanings—each patient receives a thorough physical examination to ensure they are healthy enough for anesthesia. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is required for all surgical and dental patients to help identify any underlying conditions and ensure the safest possible anesthetic plan. Whenever possible, we recommend completing this bloodwork prior to the day of surgery.

For more advanced procedures, such as mass removals or abdominal surgery, additional diagnostics may be recommended as part of the pre-surgical evaluation.

During surgery, your pet is continuously monitored by a trained veterinary technician dedicated to anesthesia and patient care. We use advanced monitoring equipment, including pulse oximetry, to track oxygen levels and heart rate, with additional monitoring such as blood pressure and EKG as needed.

We utilize modern, balanced anesthesia protocols designed to maximize safety and comfort—similar principles used in human medical settings.

Pain management is an essential part of every surgical experience. Pain control is included in all surgical procedures and extensive dental cleanings, and we tailor medications to each patient to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery.  For many procedures, our therapeutic laser can also be used to reduce inflammation and support healing.
